Hi there! Today I am sharing a quick tutorial for the triple time stamping technique. I will also share some (hopefully) useful tips about using it for cardmaking.
I like using stamping to create my own backgrounds (see older posts here, here and here), and Triple time stamping is a very nice way to to that. You basically do the stamping over a paper that is made of three or more layers. After stamping, we add matting to the layers, and combine them again.
Classic Triple Time Stamping Tutorial
A classic triple time stamping card looks similar to this. As you can see, the layers are lined up and centered, and most of the stamped images “cross” two or more layers:
To make this kind of card, you will need:
3 pieces of white paper, of size 4 x 5 ¼ “, 3 x 4 ¼ ” and 2 x 3 ¼ ”
3 pieces of black paper for the matting, of size 4 ¼ x 5 ½ “, 3 ¼ x 4 ½ ” and 2 ¼ x 3 ½
Note that each layer is 1″ smaller (on each side) than the previous layer.
First, line up and center the three pieces of white paper. Put some temporary adhesive (or washi tape) on the back of the top layers, so they will stick together while we do the stamping:
Then, stamp your sentiment and the images around it. Make sure that the stamped images go over at least two layers. For this card I used Dylusions Stamps & Stencil – Garden Leaves set by Ranger and Archival Ink. The sentiment is from the Floral Frame Stamp Set by Altenew.
Next, it is time to color the images. Because the stamps look like scribbled images, I did only basic coloring with Distress Markers:
Now, adhere each layer to the matching matting layers. Our final step is to adhere the matted layers to each other. It is important to line up the images perfectly, to achieve a continuous look on the card.
This is what the finished card looks like:
I also stamped one mushroom on the inside of the card, so that it will match with the card front:
Here is another example of this layout, using the same stamp set. This one is definitely my favorite! I think the bird is cute and funny 🙂
Here is a photo of the inside of the card:
And here is the final example. I used the Pretty Peonies stamp set by WPlus9. This time I didn’t color the images, because this is a layering stamp set 🙂 I stamped the colors with Gina K. Designs dye inks.
Twisted Triple Time Stamping
If you’re looking for an easy way to alter the classic triple time stamping technique and create a unique look – this one is for you! Simply arrange the white layers asymmetrically or twist them a little. Everything else stays the same – white panel sizes, matting sizes, etc.
Here is the card that I made using the twist triple time stamping:
and here is another photo, where you can see a butterfly peeking from the inside of the card:
